Democracy Masterclass programme now open for young people

Posted 26.11.2019

Founded in 2011, The Patchwork Foundation is a UK-based charity committed to strengthening democracy. They focus on communities and individuals that are traditionally underrepresented, and seek to engage young people from these communities, who are interested in pursuing a career in politics or civil society

The Patchwork Foundation works to equip young people with the necessary skills and experience to encourage active participation in democracy and wider civil society. They believe that our society is only as good as our democracy and our democracy is only as great as the range of the voices within it. Increased confidence and self-belief leads to greater participation and realisation. The result is a stronger and more representative country; a nation where everyone can play their part, and a society that hears and responds to the needs of all.

Over the course of a year young people attend a series of ten masterclasses delivered by prominent politicians, civil servants and journalists. Alongside this they receive one to one mentoring to increase their confidence and help them to succeed in their chosen careers. Applications are now being accepted for the 2020 programme.

The Masterclass Programme seeks to educate and train young adults from disadvantaged and minority communities with classes from top political and public figures.

The Patchwork Masterclass programme aims to develop personal and professional skills, increase political knowledge and experience over a ten-month programme. The programme enables participants to improve their long-term prospects, self-belief, and confidence as active members of political and civil society.

With over 150 graduates of the programme, many have gone on to work directly with politics, charities, NGOs and the private sector. Previous tutors have included Secretaries of State, Journalists and Political Strategists, with each cohort being given the opportunity to attend a special Masterclass at 10 Downing Street.

Deadline for applications is December 8th 2019
