East Midlands Gambling Support Service

Posted 13.06.2019

Citizens Advice have been commissioned by GambleAware to deliver the Gambling Support Service (GSS). GambleAware is an independent charity tasked to fund research, education and treatment services to help reduce gambling-related harm in Great Britain. The East Midlands Gambling Support hub is delivered by Citizens Advice South Derbyshire & City.

The service aims to raise awareness of gambling-related harm (GRH) and provide information and advice to the public about the risks of gambling and what support is available. We provide education and training to organisations and attend local and national events to raise awareness of gambling-related harm and the services that are available to support people.

GambleAware previously funded Citizens Advice Newport to develop and deliver a pilot project testing the effectiveness of raising awareness of GRH through advice and education with frontline workers to prevent and minimise gambling-related harm with vulnerable groups. Following the success of this pilot we are now rolling out the national Gambling Support Service across England and Wales with the following aims:

  • Promote a public health approach to the identification and treatment of gambling-related harm, in which a broader range of public services play a greater role in this support.
  • Increase awareness of gambling-related harm and prevention services amongst frontline service providers as well as vulnerable individuals.
  • Develop a stronger evidence base to understand gambling-related harm prevalence through improved screening.

To achieve these aims, the project will focus on three key strands of activity:

  • Training – expanding the reach of face-to-face and online training, workshops and events for frontline staff (to the Citizens Advice network and wider). This will increase capacity for the early identification of gambling-related harm.
  • Awareness events – expanding the reach of the Gambling Support Service at local and national conferences and events with accessible, easy to understand information and materials.
  • Client Support – delivering enhanced screening, brief advice and interventions for vulnerable individuals identified to be at risk of GRH, supported by a robust referral process for specialist support.
