Celebrate National Employability Day on June 26th

Posted 02.06.2020

Each year the employment sector support body called the Employment Related Services Association (ERSA) leads a campaign to shine a ‘spotlight’ on the employability sector. On 26th June, it is National Employability Day. This is an opportunity to for employment support organisations and employers to celebrate what they have been doing to support people so that people are able to move closer to the labour market, and in to employment.

Building Better Opportunities (BBO) is one of many programmes that supports unemployed and economically inactive people overcome barriers and have the personalised support to enable them to make work a possibility. From the end of March 2020, BBO’s Towards Work and Opportunity & Change (employment-focused projects) moved 174 people in to employment, which makes up 17 % of those supported – this number is increasing monthly as the support we are able to offer continues. The third BBO Project, Money Sorted, does not have direct employment-focused outcomes, but still moved 47 people into employment, although this hasn’t been included in the aforementioned statistics.

We are one of many ESF and National Lottery Community Fund projects that are delivered across D2N2 supporting different groups of vulnerable groups to move forward; and more are due to start over the coming year that will have a similar focus. These projects also have important business engagement roles where businesses are actively engaged with so that they can understand some of the challenges faced by vulnerable cohorts and understand the need to recruit more inclusively.

The current pandemic is obviously bringing about additional challenges to the labour market, and our hard work to date is going to be all the more felt and valued. We will continue to support those that require the help, advice and guidance to progress into new opportunities. We will be a key part of the economic recovery plans to help ensure that those who are impacted, have the right support for them.

As a result of the pandemic, National Employability Day is all the more important. This year, National Employability Day will be celebrated virtually through an online campaign on 26th June 2020.

ESRA are calling for member organisations to join them on Friday 26th June to show how strong and resilient the employability sector continues to be and how it can carry on supporting people in the face of the pandemic. Any organisation that supports people to enter or progress in work can get involved in Employability Day, including charities, businesses, employers, social enterprises, local authorities, housing associations, training providers and community groups. In 2019, over 750 organisations took part.

Please share innovative stories and how your organisation continues to help people progress towards the labour market.
