Small Business, Big Heart: bringing communities together

Posted 21.03.2019

Smaller businesses are very often the heartbeat of their communities up and down the United Kingdom, but more needs to be done to understand the exact nature of their contribution, beyond the products and services they provide as part of their day job. The UK Government’s vision is one of better connected communities, more neighbourliness, and businesses of all sizes, which together strengthen society. In the report Small Business, Big Heart; bringing communities together, the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) demonstrates the extent to which small firms support and contribute to solving a number of challenges faced by our local communities. In it, FSB shares insights gathered through in-depth survey work and qualitative evidence, collected from interviews with their members.

Small businesses are agents of social change. They provide jobs, skills and training for those furthest from the labour market including young people and older workers, those with disabilities and mental health conditions, and those with low levels of educational attainment.
